The Game Audio Industry
Just 30 years ago, game development was the equivalent of two people creating games in a garage for the new console market (beginning with the Magnavox Odyssey) and early home computers from Apple, Commodore and Tandy.
As the game industry grew, new console and computer technology allowed developers to move from garages to small companies. The next generation of games had more features like game audio, which used a composer/programmer to create tone-generated tunes with up to four voices using programming languages like Basic.
Game audio is now mixed with surround audio in multiple layers and components, using the latest software and hardware technologies to improve a player’s immersion into the atmosphere of the game experience.
By 2011, the worldwide gaming market is projected to be worth $48.9 billion at a compound annual growth rate of 9.1%. Game development companies like Blizzard Entertainment, creators of World of Warcraft and Starcraft, have a staff of over 2,000 employees.
The game industry is one of the few strong entertainment industries that continues to grow. The technology of personal computers and next-generation consoles like the Xbox 360, Wii (Nintendo) and PlayStation 3, utilize multi-core processing, massive amounts of memory and even have Blu-Ray capability.
